Research priorities
canXcer welcomes serious biomedical questions across multiple disease areas. These priorities guide grant review without limiting the program to a closed list of conditions.
Priority research areas
Prevention, early interception, treatment, resistance, molecular vulnerabilities, biomarkers, and questions that help researchers prioritize the next experiment.
Immune pathways, disease mechanisms, treatment-response questions, biomarkers, and underserved research gaps in autoimmune disease.
Disease mechanisms, complications, treatment questions, quality of life, and research needs affecting historically underrepresented populations.
Molecular pathways, progression, biomarkers, intervention hypotheses, and questions that can strengthen neurodegenerative research decisions.
Serious, well-defined projects involving other debilitating conditions are encouraged when the proposed work fits canXcer’s governed capabilities.
Priority consideration may be given to work addressing significant gaps affecting veterans, Black Americans, underrepresented populations, and people historically excluded from biomedical research. See why veteran research representation matters.
Review lens
A priority area alone does not guarantee an award. Review also considers whether the proposed work is clear, responsible, feasible, and aligned with available capabilities.
Is the research question or hypothesis specific, understandable, and supported by a coherent rationale?
Could the work meaningfully improve understanding, prioritization, prevention, treatment, or a later research decision?
Can the proposed project be responsibly bounded within available methods, evidence, compute, review, and time?
Does the project address an important resource gap, research disparity, underserved population, or overlooked question?
Does the work match canXcer’s current scientific capabilities and available grant capacity?
Priority questions
No. The listed priorities guide consideration, but they are not an exclusive eligibility list. Strong projects involving other debilitating diseases are encouraged to apply.
No. Priority consideration may be given to meaningful representation and access gaps, but applicants are not required to focus exclusively on those populations.
Yes. Projects may connect biology, medicine, data science, engineering, public health, or other disciplines when they present a defined biomedical research question.
